Importance measure-based maintenance strategy optimization: Fundamentals, applications and future directions

Frontiers of Engineering Management doi: 10.1007/s42524-024-4003-0

Abstract: Numerous maintenance strategies have been proposed in the literature related to reliability. This paper focuses on the utilization of reliability importance measures to optimize maintenance strategies. We analyze maintenance strategies based on importance measures and identify areas lacking sufficient research. The paper presents principles and formulas for advanced importance measures within the context of optimizing maintenance strategies. Additionally, it classifies methods of maintenance strategy optimization according to importance measures and outlines the roles of these measures in various maintenance strategies. Finally, it discusses potential challenges that optimization of maintenance strategies based on importance measures may encounter with future technologies.

Robust ensemble of metamodels based on the hybrid error measure

Frontiers of Mechanical Engineering 2021, Volume 16, Issue 3,   Pages 623-634 doi: 10.1007/s11465-021-0641-7

Abstract: Metamodels have been widely used as an alternative for expensive physical experiments or complex, time-consuming computational simulations to provide a fast but accurate analysis. However, challenge remains in the prior determination of the most suitable metamodel for a particular case because of the lack of information about the actual behavior of a system. In addition, existing studies on metamodels have largely restricted on solving deterministic problems (e.g., data from finite element models), whereas some real-life engineering problems (e.g., data from physical experiment) are stochastic problems with noisy data. In this work, a robust ensemble of metamodels (EMs) is proposed by combining three regression stand-alone metamodels in a weighted sum form. The weight factor is adaptively determined according to the hybrid error metric, which combines global and local error measures to improve the accuracy of the EMs. Furthermore, three typical individual metamodels that can filter noise are selected to construct the EMs to extend their application in practical engineering problems. Three well-known benchmark problems with different levels of noise and three engineering problems are used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed EMs. Results show that the proposed EMs have higher accuracy and robustness than the individual metamodels and other typical EMs in major cases.

Overlap maximum matching ratio (OMMR): a new measure to evaluate overlaps of essential modules

Xiao-xia ZHANG,Qiang-hua XIAO,Bin LI,Sai HU,Hui-jun XIONG,Bi-hai ZHAO

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2015, Volume 16, Issue 4,   Pages 293-300 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1400282

Abstract: Protein complexes are the basic units of macro-molecular organizations and help us to understand the cell’s mechanism. The development of the yeast two-hybrid, tandem affinity purification, and mass spectrometry high-throughput proteomic techniques supplies a large amount of protein-protein interaction data, which make it possible to predict overlapping complexes through computational methods. Research shows that overlapping complexes can contribute to identifying essential proteins, which are necessary for the organism to survive and reproduce, and for life’s activities. Scholars pay more attention to the evaluation of protein complexes. However, few of them focus on predicted overlaps. In this paper, an evaluation criterion called overlap maximum matching ratio (OMMR) is proposed to analyze the similarity between the identified overlaps and the benchmark overlap modules. Comparison of essential proteins and gene ontology (GO) analysis are also used to assess the quality of overlaps. We perform a comprehensive comparison of serveral overlapping complexes prediction approaches, using three yeast protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. We focus on the analysis of overlaps identified by these algorithms. Experimental results indicate the important of overlaps and reveal the relationship between overlaps and identification of essential proteins.

Strategic Study of CAE 2005, Volume 7, Issue 3,   Pages 1-5

Abstract:

Transport has become the dominant oil-consuming sector in the world. Oil use in the sector has increased steadily over the past 30 years and now represents nearly two-thirds of total IEA oil consumption. This article examines a variety of options and strategies in transport of the developed countries to reduce oil consumption. Some suggestions are proposed for saving oil in transport of China.

Facing Challenges and Searching Chances at the Same Time——The Present Status of Chinese Flower Enterprise

Chen Junyu

Strategic Study of CAE 2002, Volume 4, Issue 10,   Pages 17-20

Abstract:

This report points out that the flower enterprise is a promising enterprise, growing up continuously and becoming better and better. The author then compares and analyses differences and commonalities between the Chinese flower enterprise and the world flower enterprise. Using ’99 Kunming International Horticultural Exposition as an example, the author is convinced that Chinese gardens and flowers may reach the first level in the world, but “Chinese Characteristics” ought to be strengthened significantly. At the beginning of China’s becoming a member of WTO, a very good way has been found for facing challenges and utilizing good chances——the so-called “Hua-Hui Xin Si Hua”,viz,①traditional Chinese famous flowers internationalized;②world famous flowers becoming“sinicized” and localized;③ wild flowers introduced and acclimatized;④flower production and management highly specialized and in large-scale. It is possible to reach the present level of flower development in the world in 50 years or more. Then,China will be turned from the “Mother of Gardens” to the “Kingdom of World Flowers”.

Time-dependent deviation of bridge pile foundations caused by adjacent large-area surcharge loads in soft soils and its preventive measures

Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering 2024, Volume 18, Issue 2,   Pages 184-201 doi: 10.1007/s11709-024-1047-5

Abstract: Time-dependent characteristics (TDCs) have been neglected in most previous studies investigating the deviation mechanisms of bridge pile foundations and evaluating the effectiveness of preventive measures. In this study, the stress-strain-time characteristics of soft soils were illustrated by consolidation-creep tests based on a typical engineering case. An extended Koppejan model was developed and then embedded in a finite element (FE) model via a user-material subroutine (UMAT). Based on the validated FE model, the time-dependent deformation mechanism of the pile foundation was revealed, and the preventive effect of applying micropiles and stress-release holes to control the deviation was investigated. The results show that the calculated maximum lateral displacement of the cap differs from the measured one by 6.5%, indicating that the derived extended Koppejan model reproduced the deviation process of the bridge cap-pile foundation with time. The additional load acting on the pile side caused by soil lateral deformation was mainly concentrated within the soft soil layer and increased with the increase in load duration. Compared with t = 3 d (where t is surcharge time), the maximum lateral additional pressure acting on Pile 2# increased by approximately 47.0% at t = 224 d. For bridge pile foundation deviation in deep soft soils, stress-release holes can provide better prevention compared to micropiles and are therefore recommended.
